ثلاثة لاهوتيون: غريغوريوس النازيانزي، باسيليوس القيصري (الكبير) أسقف قيصرية، وغريغوريوس النيصي (أسقف نيصص)، من منطقة كبدوكية (تركيا حاليًّا). إن صياغتهم للاهوت مسيحي لعقيدة الثالوث وعقيدة الكريستولوجيا "دراسة المسيح: لاهوته وناسوته" كانت موسَّعة وشاملة. فقد (1) دافعوا عن قانون الإيمان النيقاوي الذي ينص على أن الابن هو من نفس جوهر الآب، وأنه إنسان بالكامل؛ (2) ناصروا ألوهية الروح القدس؛ (3) صاغوا بوضوح الولادة الأزلية للابن والانبثاق الأزلي للروح القدس؛ (4) عبَّروا عن الثالوث بصفته جوهرًا واحدًا في ثلاثة أقانيم؛ و(5) حاربوا الهرطقات، التي تضمنت الأريوسية، والابولينارية.
